As everyone in this country is aware of(unless they have been in a coma), the political divide is growing.
This divide is widening due to the "radicals" on ALL sides. They have taken over the discussion and have become the "voice" of politics in this country for some reason.
If you look clearly at things, because you agree with ANY major political group on an issue in this country does NOT mean that you "toe the line" and stand in solidarity with them on every single issue.
I will talk about myself and my beliefs to attempt to illustrate this, I believe that government has grown too large in this country and no longer has any idea what "fiscal restraint" means any more. To MANY that puts me solidly in the "Republican" camp. BUT while holding that belief I ALSO believe quite strongly in personal freedoms. The abortion issue is one that has me torn, it is NOT something that I would choose concerning a child that I have fathered, yet I DO NOT think that means that it should be denied to those who wish to make that choice. I don't think that the government has ANY place in defining what is "acceptable" as far as a persons sexuality is, as long as those involved are consenting ADULTS, and NO PLACE in forcing those that do not wish to accept it to indeed accept it. IF it is something that is meant to be, then I think that with time the majority of folks in this country will come to accept. On environmental issues things get tricky, I LOVE the outdoors and being outside in nature. I DO NOT want to see that lost, but in the meantime folks DO need to live and work, and while SOME protections are needed SOME of it goes completely overboard and has a MAJOR impact upon this country. There are tons of other issues like this also.
YET if you agree with one of the major parties on an issue you are "branded" by those in the other party's as one of "them" and ANY stand you have on any OTHER issue is dismissed out of hand and not even heard. Actions like this do NOTHING to bring us together and only widen the gap.
It is NOT the moderate folks in EITHER party doing this, it is the hot heads and the radicals. It has gotten to the point that ideas are thrown out and dismissed out of hand because they came from "one of them". This IS NOT helping our country or the people in it, it's sad that the health of our country has been lost to some giant game of one-ups-manship. Folks like to talk about "bi-partisanship" yet in practice it has become nothing but one side dictating to the other.
So NOW is the time for the moderate voices to be heard, INSTEAD of the radical voices raised in anger.
WE the moderates have allowed this to happen, WE have allowed the political landscape in this country to become so polarized, WE have for the most part either allowed our voices to be drowned out or have(as in MY case) quit trying to be heard in disgust.
You can see this happening with the TEA party movement, MOST of whom are really just sick and tired of being lied to and abused by our own government. Yet those in each of the two major parties are attempting to derail this movement with their radical rhetoric. Those on the left will find every offensive sign or person that they can and advance THOSE as the "face" of this movement. Those on the right are trying to either buy their way into this movement in an attempt to capitalize on the discontent hoping that it will result in votes for their candidates, or they are trying to subvert the message and twist it to mean the same thing as what they are preaching.
Well it is PAST time for the "moderates" to take control of the political discussion in this country. Common ground CAN be found, it MUST be found before we tear this country apart.
Common ground DOES NOT mean saying "NO" to everything, it also DOES NOT mean "Dictating Terms" and "Demanding" things. Deadlines on legislation, while necessary SOMETIMES, should NOT be used as a way to stifle true debate. Delighting in the misfortune of others should have no place in our political discussions, yet you can find dozens of articles here on the vine highlighting some personal failing of some politician and folks using that to slam ALL of those who's party that person happens to share.
So this is a challenge to ALL moderates from any and all of the myriad political outlooks in this country to stand up and tell the radicals NO MORE!!!!
We have seen the face of radicalism in the news in OTHER countries, do we really want to see that here?
